Anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs are used to reduce the risk of blood clots and prevent heart attacks and strokes: Anticoagulants Also known as blood thinners, these drugs slow down the body's process of forming clots. They are given to people who are at high risk of developing blood clots, such as those who have had heart valve surgery. Examples of anticoagulants include heparin, warfarin, apixaban (Eliquis®), and rivaroxaban (Xarelto®). Antiplatelets These drugs prevent blood cells called platelets from clumping together to form clots. They are mainly taken by people who have had a heart attack or stroke. Examples of antiplatelets include aspirin and clopidogrel.
